CREATIVITY AND POSITIVE BEHAVIOR GO THE DISTANCE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

With holiday excitement and anticipation in the air, December can be a challenging time for students to stay focused and consistently display positive behavior. But Mrs. Beairsto and class aide Mrs. Orrio know that, with a little creativity, holiday themes can be used to inspire and reinforce kindness and responsibility. And so the holiday behavior chain was born.

Students had several, daily opportunities to earn chain links by displaying positive behavior, such as coming to class prepared, completing homework assignments, working hard in class--and practicing acts of kindness. Each class period, they checked off their social and academic efforts, and added their points at the end of the day. Every Friday, they turned their points into chain links and connected them to see the evidence of their progress.

At the end of the series, students joined their individual chains into a collective one and stretched it around the sixth grade hallway—showing that positive behavior goes a long, long way! (Additional photos)
