MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS SHINE AT COUNTY’S SPELLING BEE

Two middle school students proudly represented Minisink Valley at the annual Orange County Spelling Bee held at Orange-Ulster BOCES on Feb. 15.

Seventh-grader Antonella and eighth-grader Taylor Poyton were among 22 contestants. They spelled their way successfully to the fourth of six rounds, before the final.

They were accompanied by their English teachers, Jessica Dickman and Jacqui Stamos, and Maggie Spicehandler, library media specialist who organized Minisink’s participation in the Spelling Bee.

“This was a very positive, valuable opportunity for our students, and a lovely event to witness. The kids were held with high esteem, and they showed great professionalism,” said Mrs. Dickman, Antonella’s English teacher.

Antonella and Taylor were the finalists for their respective grades in the middle school’s Spelling Bee held on December 20. Twenty-five students participated in the school’s Bee, after qualifying through spelling contests in all English classes.

The OU BOCES School Library System organizes the annual Bee with sponsorship by the Times Herald Record. Each Bee participant received ribbons from the Orange County School Boards Association.

Congratulations Taylor and Antonella!
