Dear Minisink Valley school community:

Messages such as this are so difficult to deliver to our school community. We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of one of our students following a car accident. Our heartfelt condolences are with the student’s family and friends during this very difficult time.

The student was one of four passengers in the car. The three other student passengers were admitted to the hospital.

The death of a child, and those who are injured — who are beloved family members and friends to so many — is always a terribly sad and troubling event for all of us. Counselors will be available when the high school opens tomorrow, Sept. 23,  to provide additional support for students and staff. These services will remain in place for as long as necessary, because this tragic news impacts our entire community.

It's extremely important for members of our school community — particularly our high school community —  to have an opportunity to talk through their feelings and reactions.  Over the next few days, please encourage your child to talk about how he/she is feeling while you listen attentively to what they’re saying and watch their behaviors.

Additionally, please know that we are here to help your child and family through this terrible grief and have many supports available. We also strongly encourage you to reach out for further assistance and guidance if you have any concerns regarding your child’s reaction to this loss.

Out of respect for what has happened, all Homecoming activities scheduled for this week, including Spirit Week, the Pep Rally and the Homecoming Dance are postponed.  This Friday’s football game remains scheduled at this time.

Thank you for your concern and thoughts during this difficult time. Please keep the student’s family and friends and the family and friends of the students who are hospitalized in your thoughts and prayers.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and respect of the delicate sensitivity of this news.

Sincerely,

Brian C. Monahan
