Sixty-three students were inducted into the High School's chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) during the 65th annual ceremony held on Jan. 21.
NHS is one of the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized co-curricular student organizations in American high schools, with 1.4 million members.
Its purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to recognize outstanding students, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop student character. Membership in a local chapter is an honor bestowed upon a student based on the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, character, leadership and service. Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.
“These new inductees are the embodiment of what we strive for as a school community, and I know they will represent Minisink Valley with honor and distinction,” said Principal Kenneth Hauck. “Their commitment to academic excellence, leadership, service to their school and community and their character are examples for other to follow.”
Emily Ruffino, acting advisor, added: "This year's inductees have excelled not only in the classroom, but also onstage, in their athletic pursuits, and within our larger community. They include musicians and performers who lead our talented band, chorus, and drama club; students who have volunteered at area hospitals; accomplished athletes; students who have served in their places of worship, at food pantries, and at animal shelters; members of community organizations like Scouts and 4-H; leaders in service clubs and organizations; and students who have traveled to other cities and states to serve the needy in our larger world community."
