Today, Feb. 28, was the 100th day of school for students at the Elementary School and Otisville Elementary, and their celebratory activities to mark the day did not disappoint!
"Celebrating the 100th day of school is important because it marks a significant milestone in the academic year," said Elementary School Principal Deborah Gallant. "Today, all of us reflect on the progress of our young students while visualizing the passage of time."
Otisville Elementary Principal Jula Downey added the day is one which also reinforces the concept of large numbers like 100 while creating a fun and engaging learning experience.
"It also fosters a sense of accomplishment and community within the classroom," she added.
Both principals noted there were many young students dressed as centenarians and all students enjoyed the many special activities their teachers had prepared for them.
Marking the 100th day is particularly popular in kindergarten to second-grade classrooms nationwide because teachers are still heavily focused on reinforcing basic math skills and numbers. The day, which varies by the academic calendars in each school district, began in 1979 in Livermore, California by teacher Lynn Taylor and is now a significant part of classroom culture. Ms. Taylor celebrated the 100th day of school in her classroom to help children understand the concrete lesson of the number 100.
