Congratulations to the 18 high school seniors who presented their unique research at the recent, 13th annual SUNY Orange Achievements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS) Conference at SUNY Orange.
Students from Emily Ruffino’s College English 101/102 classes submitted their research papers to the SUNY Orange Undergraduate Research Task Force last December, received feedback on their research from a SUNY Orange professor and prepared a research poster or presentation for the conference.
“Their work was inspired by the nonfiction readings we discussed in class throughout the fall semester,” said Ms. Ruffino. “Each student selected a research focus based on their individual interests in the curriculum. The intent of the SOARS Conference is to support SUNY Orange students in their growth as researchers and to provide an environment for them to share their knowledge with a broader academic community.”
Students spent months preparing their presentations, from their initial research question, to examining scholarly articles to deepen their understanding, developing a research argument and managing their sources with integrity.
“They became experts on their subjects, shared their knowledge in an academic setting on campus at SUNY Orange, and saw the tangible results of sustained hard work,” added Ms. Ruffino. “I was proud to mentor and represent them in this endeavor. Working with this group of highly talented and motivated seniors throughout their research process was a reminder of the intellectual curiosity, ambition, and courage that these students possess."
