budget development news

The Minisink Valley Board of Education unanimously adopted the proposed $123,533,205 budget for the 2025-26 school year at its April 24 meeting.

The proposed 2025-26 budget preserves all current academic, co-curricular/athletic opportunities for all students, meaning everything which is in place for this current school year will be maintained in the 2025-26 school year.

This proposed budget includes a 2.79% tax levy increase. This tax levy increase is the total amount of money the district can raise through property taxes. The tax levy increase is below the maximum New York State tax cap levy available to the district. As such, the proposed tax levy is 100% tax cap compliant. The proposed budget needs a simple majority to approve.

The proposed 2025-26 budget also includes the purchase of 12 new school buses: five, 72-passenger buses; two, 42-passenger wheelchair buses and three, 30-passenger wheelchair buses along with two minivans. The cost of these buses is $2,060,410. After estimated total state aid is applied, the net cost is $515,103.

“The prudent and respectful use of taxpayer dollars remains our first financial priority,” said Superintendent Brian C. Monahan. “The Board of Education and Administration began work on this proposed budget last fall. We have examined every aspect of this budget thoroughly and have been transparent in all our discussions. All five budget development meetings were recorded for the benefit of our community members who were not able to attend these meetings and remain available on our website.”

The district’s budget hearing will be held on Thursday, May 8  at 6 p.m. at the Middle School auditorium.

Voters will cast ballots on Tuesday, May 20 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at two polling locations, depending on their polling district:  The Intermediate School Gym A on the district’s Route 6 campus or Otisville Elementary School Library.

The annual budget newsletter will be mailed to all residents in early May.
