Four High School students have created a special sign commemorating the 175th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Wawayanda.
Sophia Goldstein, Sylvia Glebocki, Brendan Elwood and Grant Teitelbaum actually began their work in their “Design and Draw for Production” during the end of the prior school year, completing it in time for the Sept. 14 .dodransbicentennial (175th) celebration.
“We started the project last school year with various designs and met with Wawayanda town representatives to decide on a final design,” said teacher Christopher Tuthill. “Once the final design was done, the sign was produced using the CNC machine. We painted and finished the sign this week for the anniversary celebration taking place this Saturday. We’re extremely proud of this sign and I’m proud of the creative work of my students to make this a reality.”
Superintendent Brian Monahan praised students for their work.
“The district believes in the importance of our students being a part of their communities and giving back,” he said. "This is another wonderful example of how the talents of our students will have a positive, long-lasting community impact. In this case, it's for our friends and neighbors in Wawayanda.”
Mr. Tuthill presented the sign to Wawayanda officials on Sept. 13 and said it will be on display at the daylong celebration at Shannen Park. The community is invited to the event, where there will be food trucks, contests, games, music, a local history display and self-guided tours of historic locations in the town.
