The Minisink Valley School District is hosting an important program on teen mental health and bullying/cyberbullying prevention for parents, led by nationally recognized author and speaker Tom Thelen, on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Middle School Auditorium.

Mr. Thelen will educate parents how to identify bullying and cyberbullying, when to intervene and when to empower kids to speak up for themselves. Most importantly, he will offer guidance on how to build a healthy, non-anxious environment at home that encourages resiliency and self-confidence.

“We’ve had many parents request information about these sensitive topics,” said Superintendent Brian Monahan. “We feel this is a tremendous opportunity for parents to become more knowledgeable about these issues and to have an equal opportunity to hear from a speaker who has presented very useful information to their children. We know how important the mental and emotional health of all our students is as it relates to their academic success and social wellbeing. We continue to look to our parents and guardians as our partners and invite everyone to attend this presentation.”

Mr. Thelen’s book. “Mental Health 101 for Teens” is an Amazon #1 new release and he’s the author of two other books for teens: “Victimproof” and “Teen Leadership Revolution.”  He is a certified instructor in youth mental health first aid, a training program by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

He is also the founder of Reset Schools, a nonprofit that partners with K-12 schools to teach mental health skills and resiliency.

Since 2012, Mr. Thelen has spoken at over 900 schools and conferences and has been interviewed on NBC, CBS and FOX.

He is also the creator of No Bullying Schools, an evidence-based bullying curriculum with a smartphone app and video lessons on bullying, social skills and student.
