Two High School and Orange-Ulster BOCES Career and Technical Education students were among 21 OU-B CTE students who earned medals at the recent SkillsUSA New York Area 4 Regional competition.
Senior Kameryn Lyons earned a gold medal as part of the Cosmetology Quiz Bowl first-place team, along with Giavana Caruso of Washingtonville, Janneli Duran of Middletown, Ruth Knight of Cornwall and Hailey Muentes of Goshen.
Senior Francesca Calabro earned a second-place silver medal in the Advertising and Design category.
In total, 56 OU-B CTE students competed in the competition, which is a prestigious technical and leadership contest where career and technical education students demonstrate their expertise in various trade, technical, and leadership fields nationwide.
“This is a significantly exciting time in the lives of our students, their families and for our organization as whole,” Director Kathleen Smith said. “Students having the ability to compete at this level and advance to the state competition is surely an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives. Our students' success is a testament not only to their personal drive and motivation but also to our staff and their commitment to excellence.”
The first-place winners will advance to the state competition, scheduled for April 23 to 25 at the Syracuse State Fairground.
